he most infamous of Nottingham's caves, Mortimer's Hole is an ancient passageway over 300 feet long which leads from the top of the Castle Rock to the foot of the cliff by Brewhouse Yard Museum.

t is reputed that through this tunnel Roger Mortimer, the lover of Queen Isabella and brutal murderer of Edward II, was surprised and seized in 1330 on the orders of the vengeful young King Edward III.

e was hanged, drawn and quartered on the 29th of November 1330 and his wretched remains skewered on spikes and left to rot on traitors gate ‘Tyburn’.
